I had my blood taken two days ago (by the consultant - private hospital) and although there is a small, and sometimes expected bruise at the site, the inside of my arm from just above my elbow heading towards my wrist now sports a five inch bruise which is not connected to the needle site bruise. Has anybody else ever experienced something like this as I have no idea if it is related to the disease or the bleeder.

hi Eve,

sounds awful !!

ni i haven't ever had that problem ... i insist i press with a cotton pad after my Bloods to limit the bruise you would expect to get but nothing more.

if it doesn't improve i would be inclined to make an appointment with your GP Nurse.

I get horrible bruising like that fairly frequently after having blood taken, as they always struggle to get enough of an amount worth testing! It usually swells too, and can be really painful.

I find it often depends on who is taking the blood, and what sort of needle they use. Because my veins are tiny, I should have a fine needle, but there isn`t always one available.

I get round this by having it taken from the back of my hand, using a butterfly needle, and my GP nearly always takes my blood now.

Hi Eve

It sounds very unusual, is it painful to touch? If it appeared soon after the blood was taken it sounds as though there may be a less obvious link. Did someone grip your arm tightly whilst taking the blood? Some drugs, such as methotrexate, can increase the possibility of bruising.

I think I would feel inclined to get it checked if you are unable to account for it. Hope it settles soon.

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson

Happened to me once, after I had given blood - I'd not pressed the needle site hard/long enough and bled under the skin.

thanks for your responses and I did get myself to the gp nurse yesterday after the consultant suggested that I get my platelets checked. her view was that there would probably be nothing wrong with my platelets as they were great just two weeks ago and she thinks the vein was blown, where the vein is punctured twice, once with the initial insertion and then again (perhaps at the side) accidentally. pressure at the first puncture site would not have stemmed the flow from another puncture site and the blood flows into the surrounding tissues. Anyway it is nicely yellow-turning 8 inch bruise but my mind has been put at rest.
